FOMO: Fear of Missing Out

FOMO: the reason why we go places when we don’t feel like it. The sinking feeling we get when we don’t have anything going on.
Why do we as humans have a fear of missing out? What is the reasoning behind it? Let me tell you about an experience that I had the other night. I had plans with my boyfriend, and all the sudden they were cancelled because his car broke down. So, there I was sitting and doing homework instead of going out on a beautiful, warm, and clear Friday night. I decided to resort to my bed and mope to myself. While I was I was sitting there I decided to scroll through my Instagram feed. I started to feel really sorry for myself because I saw pictures of people out having fun and laughing and there I was, doing nothing. I had contracted a serious case of FOMO.

 FOMO has the following side effects: moping, feeling sorry for oneself, deep cravings for a full pint of Ben and Jerry’s half baked, and severe overthinking. I got a sinking pit in my stomach and started to think about all the times that I said something weird. I am sure that I am not hanging out with anyone tonight because they will never forget that awkward thing I said 2 years ago and they were too embarrassed to invite me anywhere. So I decided to satisfy my craving for ice cream and I ate the entire pint. That’s right. As I sat there I started to wonder why I was so upset. After all, I didn’t have to get dressed and go socialize, I was in comfy sweat pants, gorging myself with my favorite ice cream, and I could go to bed early! Plus I could watch Breaking Bad for as long as I wanted to and listen to Love on Top on repeat with no one telling me they’re sick of it. I realized that being alone isn’t that bad after all! I think everyone should contract a condition of FOMO occasionally, to get back in tune with their inner self.

  2. First, the half baked is so good. Tried it for the first time last weekend and my life will never be the same again. I like the idea of learning how to be by yourself. That can be scary at times, especially when there are fun things that are going on. Being alone though, especially when there is not a lot to distract you can be a serious learning experience.

  3. I can relate to this on a deep level! But seriously, I have a serious problem with FOMO and I think you're right. You don't have to please everyone all the time. In fact, it's good to get some alone time and focus on developing yourself.
